LAND CRABS: THE ILLUSTRATED ‘WHAT, WHERE, HOW, & WHY’
The Loxahatchee River District organisation produces excellent informative posters on wildlife and environmental themes. With their approval, I have a dedicated page for these: CLICK LOXAHATCHEE. You will find posters about Bonefish, Tarpon, Lionfish, Nassau Grouper, Spiny Lobster, Coral Reefs, Elkhorn Coral, and Seagrasses. I’d be surprised if each one didn’t contain at least one interesting factual nugget that you didn’t know before. The range of subjects is gradually being expanded and one of the latest concerns the Land Crab. Click the poster twice to enlarge it and make it legible.
My factoid nugget from this poster is that juvenile bonefish predate on larval crabs. I suppose it’s obvious, but I hadn’t thought about it. From the fisherman’s angle a very good reason to protect, and ensure the proliferation of, adult land crabs!
For photos of these crabs and a short video demo of how they use their claws, here are links to two previous posts about them

Hmm, the land crab’s diet includes faeces, according to the fact sheet. Yum!

Each to their own, I suppose. Reincarnation as a dung beetle doesn’t greatly appeal. RH

Sounds a great idea, more than happy to experiment. I always take a small camera (in case I catch a fish…). Maybe best email me at
rollingharbour.delphi@gmail.com I’m in west London at the moment, so all this should be easy! RH

Very interesting reading, RH. I have found loads of things I didn’t know anything about. 🙂

Nor did I until I met one close too – appealingly aggressive towards a 6’6″ human, with a lot of pincer clacking and waving! RH

Thanks Mark. I might just take you up on that! Have you tested one at Syon to see if you can induce a take? 😎

Hi RH – yes, I definitely succeeded, if you have a moment, please read “saving the best for last” which I posted at the end of March, after my final outing last season… This is the shrimp pattern that I created specifically for spotted grunter and bonefish – I just need a willing field tester and some photographic evidence! Will tie some for you over the weekend if you are still up for it!

That sounds like a good challenge! We are next going out in March. The most successful flies for Abaco are shrimps and daddies with silver sparkle and pink – see
The ones in the middle and at the back of the box are the go-to flies, with others as ‘what shall we try now?’ reserves. But maybe I ought to be armed with a few of your shrimps for fun, and see what the (very experienced) local guides make of them – and boat partners, who are invariably better fishermen than I am! RH
