The Sargeant Major was the first reef fish species I encountered on my first ever reef snorkelling trip (aged oh never mind that). I was instantly charmed by them and their inquisitive ways, sometimes swimming right up to my mask for a closer look at me. Here’s an antiquarian picture of them, when they were also known less attractively as cow pilots; and one from Melinda Riger of Grand Bahama Scuba.
