WOODTURNING BY STEPHEN KNOWLES
We were very pleased to meet Stephen at an excellent Art Show at Bahama Palm Shores, along with his wife Anita. Stephen works wonders with local wood and his work is well-known on Abaco. We went to the Show in a group, and many of us succumbed to temptation at Stephen’s stall and bought items he’d made. Our treasures were – for Mrs RH – a beautiful small bowl and – for RH – something a bit fishy…

SEAHORSE DRAWING, BY ALEX KONAHIN
‘ArtMagenta’ is a prolific drawer, in particular of birds. Some of his birds – the species you may see on Abaco – are featured in a sub-page to this one (via drop-down menu). More will be added from time to time. Meanwhile, I enjoyed his spot-on depiction of the birdwatcher’s life – looking elsewhere at the crucial moment…

HUMMINGBIRD COTTAGE ART CENTRE, HOPE TOWN, ABACO

A thriving new art centre has opened in Hope Town, showcasing the work of local artists. Art courses are also run there; and the premises will provide a great place for local events. The centre has an excellent website where you will find all the details: click HERE How lucky I already have an appropriate logo as a header…

SIXTY SHADES OF BLUE
DESCRIBING THE COLOURS OF THE SEA
This is an aerial photograph of the Delphi Club – before it was ever built! It now stands where that white road ends on the left side, on a cliff overlooking the lovely 3/4 mile beach that is Rolling Harbour. The picture is a very good example of the gradual shelving of the sea floor, and the wide variety of sea colour graded from the shallows to to deeper ocean. It’s easy to pin some names on bands of colour – turquoise, teal, indigo, cobalt. I have no artistic eye at all, but even I can separate at least a dozen distinct colours in the marine palette below. But how to describe them?
I had a look online for shades of blue and arrived at this colour chart. Click on it to enlarge it. Some of the shades don’t apply to the sea, but many do, and some are quite apt for the photo above. So maybe a ‘Yale-blue’ sea has a valid meaning in nature…
SERGEANT MAJOR ART
Sergeant Majors. Cheerful friendly stripey fish of the reefs, omnipresent. The first reef fish ever to encounter me, the gasping, sploshing snorkelling novice of the shallows. I bought one of Brigitte Carey’s colourful prints, which she kindly signed during an excellent leisurely lunch at Fireflies, White Sound with our respective spouses. The fish has now been brought to the UK, and he seems happy enough in his new surroundings. Always make me smile.
